The physics of the processes involved in the formation large scale
structures in the Universe is described. It is demonstrated how the standard
model of structure formation has a number of quite remarkable successes. The
consistency with observations of temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic
Microwave Background is very impressive and has led to the accurate
determination of cosmological parameters. This success means that even small
deviations from the standard picture can contain significant new physics. A
number of examples of these will be given.
